More Tynan

Jul. 26th, 2007 09:38 am
One sentence from Ken Tynan's fabulous pastiche review on "Krapps' Last Tape" by Samuel Beckett, and by extension on absurdist drama as a whole:

"Themes, Madam? Nay, it is, I know not themes"

I will link to the whole thing if I can find it anywhere, as it is among the most brilliant pieces of short writing I have ever encountered.
I've been trying to think of a description for this cat story, but in the end I have given up, so I leave you to make up your own.

It reminds me that, rather sadly, this year's outdoor work saw no sign of the large, friendly cta that used to live in the Sue Ryder Home (aka the Old Bishop's Palace) next door.
Another link, I fear:

Just found this article about Tom Lehrer and his political message (or lack thereof). It's not brilliant writing, and it repeats itself more often than I am comfortable with, but it contains plenty of good quotes from Lehrer himself, and some interesting background, so anyone wanting to know more about this cult hero could do a lot worse...
Since [livejournal.com profile] timlewis reminded me, and since the noble authoress [livejournal.com profile] huskyteer is also on my F'List, just wanted to check that all you fans of Harry Potter and of Molesworth had seen:

Ho for Hoggwarts!

Right - I'm going to the pub.
Notes from this evening at the Castle pub:

i) at one point we had three of those metal numbered whatsits used for food orders. [livejournal.com profile] purplepiano looked at them, pondered for about 0.3 seconds, and rearranged them so they were palindromic. Not a stupendous mathematical feat, but a laudable one nonetheless

ii) Idea for crossover fiction - "The Hardy Boys and the Mystery of the Great Old Ones". They were just exploring around Innsmouth Cove - they had no idea where the whole thing would lead...

The brain drain to London continues with dizzying speed, but as long as it boasts [livejournal.com profile] gnimmel, [livejournal.com profile] purplepiano and the good Doctor Jarrett, Cambridge will remain a centre of fine and mirthful conversation to rival any round table in the Metropolis.
