Nov. 25th, 2005 09:04 amTalk of phone etiquette elsewhere has reminded me of this sory from last week, which I meant to post earlier.
On Friday, I wanted to speak to my dad, to check that my present for my mum's birthday had been sorted out (I thought it had, but wasn't sure). Rang the house a couple of times, but got no response, so left it. Was going to the theatre anyway, so couldn't make later phone calls.
When IO got back to the hotel and switched my phone back on, got a message saying "YOU RANG BUT LEFT NO MESSAGE. WE CALLED YR LANDLINE BUT NO RESPONSE. IS EVERYTHING OK? RSVP. MUM."
sent off a response saying yes fine, just wanted to speak to Dad, nothing urgent, would call tomorrow, and that I was in a hotel in Eton.
Woke up the next morning to another message "DAD SAYS PRESENT SORTED. GLAD YOU'RE OK. WE MUMS ALL WORRY - THOUGHT RUSHED OFF TO EMERGENCY ROOM, ETC ETC".
To extrapolate from the fact I phoned but didn't leave a message to me being rushed off to hospital, blood gushing from every orifice, is a pretty staggering leap of imagination, I'd have thought...
It does make life difficult, too - like the time when (still living at home, and without a mobile) I went into town, ran into an old mate, and we decided to go for a couple of pints. I got home about 6:30 to discover my mother frantic with worry, and threatening to call the police etc. I was, at the time, 22.
