Dec. 15th, 2008 07:43 amJust heard the new version of "Hallelujah", which is hotly tipped to be the Christmas No 1 this year (insofar as anyone gives a stuff about the Christmas No 1 any more).
Hmmmm...
Well, it's not bad, and Alexandra Burke (?) can clearly sing, but I can't help feeling people should leave Hallelujah alone - it's a perfect song, and with two contrasting, brilliant versions (Jeff Buckley, and the Leonard Cohen original), we've already got it nailed as a race. Maybe it's time a woman sang it?
The only specific criticism I have is the big finish. It really isn't a song in need of a colossal gospel flourish, and you can't really justify singing "And love is not a victory march / It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah" exactly like a victory march...
Still, it beats Mr Blobby, and if it encourages people to listen to Cohen (there's other stuff at least as good as Hallelujah in there) and/or to buy Grace by Jeff Buckley, it'll have done a great thing. [Sorry, I know that's very dismissive of Ms Burke, and as I said earlier, she can certainly sing, but I'm not convinced the world needs another young soulstress a little too much in love with the tremolo]
