As usual, all plans to have a quiet day at home, doing things like cleaning, got blown out of the water. In this case by...

Norwich - it's currently full of elephants! I recall [livejournal.com profile] sunflowerinrain had mentioned this, but I hadn't got round to seeing it until now (and they'll all be gone very shortly). I saw about 15 or the 53 elephants, I think, like a much more beautiful and delicious version of the multiple Gormleys around London a while back.

Norwich. It's still great.

Also nipped up to Cromer for some sea air. Cromer isn't quite as exactly preserved as Sheringham,. but it still has some of the faded seaside glamour thing which [livejournal.com profile] several_bees has written about so eloquently. I sat on the Pier and looked back to the town, the view dominated by the Hotel de Paris. When I'm in Paris next month, I shall have to check the Champs Elysees for a Hotel of Cromer.
Cromer is famous for crabs, and lots of people were fishing for them from the Pier, with a very high success rate. It sppears to be easier to catch crabs on the Pier in Cromer than in a whorehouse in Hackney Wick.

I love standing by the sea. Facing the sea, watching and hearing the waves break, the sheer immensity of the space, I find it impossible to think of anything else. It's like the mind is totally purified, and cut free of all the crap that usually besets it. It reminds me of Larkin's line in High Windows about "sun-comprehending glass, which shows nothing, and is noweher, and is endless" - I don't buy the standard interpretation of that line as dull of depression and fear, perhaps because I have always rather liked the idea of being nowehere, amid the endless, for a while.

A thunderstorm arrived just as we were leaving Cromer, so the trip across North Norfolk was lit by lightning, at least until we ground to a halt bnecause lighning had struck one of the signals. Given this turned out to have been within a mile or two of where we stopped, perhaps we were lucky it wasn't us that it struck...
The resultant delay did at least give me the chance to finish the day watching the pencils do their thing.
