Wackiness

Aug. 14th, 2007 01:13 pm
Going to get some lunch today, just off Chesterton Road, I walked past the Wacky Hair Company.

My, but they have some Zany, Kooky 'n' TOTLY UP 4 IT people working there, don't they?

The palpable air of listless torpor is obviously just a disguise for their true Wild & Wacky natures, which would, if allowed unrestrained expression, blow the windows of the shop out, and cause drivers passing by to suddenly rip their clothes off and Go Totally Nuts, Man!

It is, however, a bloody good disguise.
I have spent virtually the entire evening rereading The Hobbit, and it has been most pleasing.

As ever, there is the pleasure of reading a book cover to cover in a short space of time, of being more within the created world than out of it, and being swept along. Though it is by no means the only type of book I enjoy, there is a lot to be said for a nobvel you can, with some effort, read in an evening.

Ultimately, the Lord of the Rings is more satisfying, because the Hobbit is fundamentally linear and episodic, and has relatively little sense of an ongoing mythology beyond the confines of the story. But the Hobbit nonetheless sparkles with Tolkien's love of language, and his descriptive powers. ... and, which is worth noting, it manages to fit and entire, fairly epic adventure into the word-count it takes Frodo et al to get to Rivendell in LotR.

The only problem, as ever, is returning to the "real" world.
Gioogling for a name I had forgotten springing from the Hobbit, however, reminded me of an important fact - never underestimate the Tolkien geeks
