Mar. 17th, 2005 01:35 pmI am due to change bosses at the beginning of next month, which gives me a grand total of three and a ha;lf working days left for my current boss.
He has, in his usual Boris-Johnson-ish way, managed to accidentally make them miserable. Principally, he has done this by telling a client that, despite their dithering about getting the information to me for over a fortnight, of courtse I can do their business plan projections by tomorrow. I currently have no idea what they want, how complex the projections are, or most importantly when the fuck I'm going to do it, in addition to all the other things he wants doing. Of course, the answer is that some of the other things that absolutely definitely needed doing before I go on holiday won't get done - I'm already coming in on saturday, but that's mostly earmarked for tryiong to organise things a bit so the ytoung lady taking the next sip from this poisoned chalice has a bit more chance than I did.
An instructive example of the way my boss thinks is one of our clients, a small company that is struggling in a saturated market. In 2002, the first year we did accounts, he charged £1,500. In 2003, when we added doing the payroll, he charged £1,000. This year he intends to charge £750. The MD of the company is one of my boss's endless series of mates, and he doesn't want to upset this chap if his company is doing badly. The fact that his staff is dwindling because his billing doesn't justify more, that the quality of work we arfe able to do is suffering, and that the firm which he part-owns is suffering in porofitiability doesn't enter into the equation. If the client is happy, that's fine.
I really did come close to leaving this firm, and am here very clearly on giving it six months to see how the new system works out. I know damned well that I won't ever fully escape my current boss's clutches, because he has too many things to think about, is always late for everything except for every meal, and desperatelyu needs everyone who works for him to keep him out of the shit. Much though I like the guy, I do think that a lengthy dip in the shit would do him a world of good.
